The destination

Why Alleppey is the backwater heart

Alappuzha — still called Alleppey by most travellers — sits on Kerala’s west coast where a lattice of canals meets Vembanad Lake, India’s longest. This is where most overnight houseboats board, cruise past coir villages and paddy, then moor overnight by a quiet bank.

Inside the district

Major locations

These are the stretches and spots that shape a visit to Alleppey.

Punnamada Lake

Open water · Sunsets · Boat races

The wide water body north of town where many houseboats gather at dusk. Home of the Nehru Trophy snake-boat race.

  • Best with an overnight cruise finishing toward evening
  • Day-cruise boats often spend mid-afternoon here
  • Crowd peaks on race week — book early

Kuttanad

Paddy · Villages · Below sea level

Farmland that sits below sea level, drained and diked for paddy. Houseboat routes thread canals between green fields.

  • Ideal for overnight village mooring
  • Pair with a morning shikara into narrower canals
  • Looks richest just after monsoon (Sep–Nov)

Vembanad Lake

Longest lake · Birds · Open cruise

India’s longest lake, shared by Alappuzha and Kottayam. Wider water means more wind and space.

  • Sunset and dawn light are strongest here
  • Kumarakom round-trips add lake mileage
  • Watch for seasonal water hyacinth patches

Pathiramanal Island

Bird island · Day stop

A small island mid-lake, known for migratory birds and short walks.

  • Best Nov–Feb for migratory birds
  • Ask when booking if your route includes a stop

Marari Beach

Arabian Sea · ~14 km from town

A quieter beach west of Alleppey town — fishing villages, soft sand, and fewer crowds.

  • About 30–40 minutes by road from the finishing point
  • Good for couples wanting sea and backwater in one trip

Alleppey town & canals

Harbour · Markets · Finishing point

Inland canals, the lighthouse beach, markets, and the jetties where most houseboats check guests in.

  • Boarding typically 12:00 PM for overnight
  • Shikara and kayak pickups near town canals
  • ATMs and pharmacies are in town, not on the boat

Greenest Kuttanad, dramatic skies, and the lowest prices.

Cochin International (COK) is about 85 km / 2–2.5 hours by road. Trivandrum (TRV) is farther, about 150 km.

By train

Alappuzha (ALLP) station is in town — a short cab to boarding points.

By road

Questions about Alleppey

Both sit on Vembanad. Alleppey has denser boarding options, more canal variety, and usually stronger value for overnight boats. Kumarakom leans resort and birdlife.

One overnight (21 hours) is enough for most first visits. Two nights unlock quieter second-day canals.

Houseboats are the headline, but shikara canals, Marari Beach, village walks, and coir culture fill a full day around the cruise.

Most boats board near Alleppey’s finishing-point jetties. The exact pin is shared on WhatsApp the day before, with captain details.
