Kumarakom is a cluster of islands and lakeside resorts on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, about an hour by road from Alleppey. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is best from November to February for migratory birds, and village canoe rides show quieter backwaters than the main houseboat routes. A night at a lakeside resort here pairs well with an Alleppey houseboat overnight for a relaxed two-night backwater trip.
