2 and 3 Bedroom Houseboats in Alleppey for Families
Guest limits, prices by category and practical tips for families and friends sharing a houseboat.
A 2 bedroom houseboat suits four people and a 3 bedroom boat suits six. On our fleet, Deluxe overnights start at ₹13,999 for two bedrooms and ₹18,999 for three, with Premium, Luxury and Ultra Luxury boats above that.
Two bedrooms or three?
Count beds, not people. Each bedroom on a Kerala houseboat has a double bed and an attached bathroom, and most boats can add an extra mattress for a child. Two couples, or parents with two children, fit well on a 2 bedroom houseboat. Three couples, a family with grandparents, or a group of friends who each want their own room should book a 3 bedroom houseboat.
Daytime capacity is higher than night capacity. Our 3-bedroom boats list up to about ten guests, but that assumes some people leave before the night. For an overnight, plan on two adults per room plus small children.
Starting prices by category
- Deluxe — 2 bedrooms from: ₹13,999; 3 bedrooms from: ₹18,999
- Premium — 2 bedrooms from: ₹17,499; 3 bedrooms from: ₹22,999
- Luxury — 2 bedrooms from: ₹29,999; 3 bedrooms from: ₹31,999
- Ultra Luxury — 2 bedrooms from: ₹44,999; 3 bedrooms from: ₹47,999
These are the lowest overnight rates currently listed. Weekends, festivals and late December cost more; our price guide explains why.
What the layout looks like
Most family houseboats have the bedrooms in a row along one side or at the back, a shared lounge and dining area at the front, and a kitchen at the stern. Luxury boats often add an upper deck with seating, which children love and which gives adults somewhere quiet in the evening. If your group includes older relatives, ask for a boat without a steep staircase to the bedrooms.
Tips for families
- Ask for life jackets in children’s sizes before you board.
- Tell the crew about allergies and spice levels when you book; the cook will adjust.
- Bring cards, books or a small game for the hour after the boat moors.
- Pack mosquito repellent and a light long-sleeved layer for the evening.
- Children up to five years sharing a bed are free on our rates page.
Our longer family houseboat tips post covers safety and planning with children in more detail.
Tips for friends travelling together
Agree in advance who takes which room; the bedrooms are similar but not always identical. Groups who want music or a later night on deck should say so when booking, since boats moor near villages and noise carries over water. Alcohol is generally allowed on private boats if you bring it yourself, but drink moderately on deck and never swim.
Picking a route
Families with small children often prefer quieter canal routes through Kuttanad, where the water is calm and there is always something to look at on the bank. Groups who want big views should ask for a route that crosses Vembanad Lake. Our guide to Alleppey houseboat routes compares the main options.
Packages for families
If the houseboat is one part of a longer holiday, look at our family houseboat overnight package, or a combined trip such as the 4-day Alleppey and Munnar package. They include transfers, so you do not have to arrange the drive to the jetty.
Booking checklist
- Number of adults and children, with children’s ages.
- Your date and whether it is flexible.
- Category preference and whether you need full-time AC.
- Any dietary needs.
- Pickup point, if you need a transfer.
How to split the cost
Because houseboats are priced per boat, sharing one is often good value. Two couples in a Deluxe 2-bedroom boat starting at ₹13,999 pay from about ₹7,000 per couple, less than two separate 1-bedroom boats. Three couples in a Deluxe 3-bedroom boat starting at ₹18,999 pay from about ₹6,300 per couple. You also share the deck, the sunset and the meals, which is half the fun.
Day cruise for bigger family gatherings
If some of your family are staying in a hotel, a day cruise on a 2- or 3-bedroom boat lets more people join without anyone needing a bed. Our rates page lists day-cruise pricing by group size, and a single boat can take more guests by day than it can overnight.
What to ask before booking
- Are all bedrooms on the same deck?
- Does every bedroom have its own bathroom?
- What are the AC hours?
- Is there an upper deck, and how steep are the stairs?
- Can the boat add an extra mattress for a child?
Whichever size you pick, the experience is the same as on any private boat: you board at noon, cruise through the afternoon, moor for the night and return after breakfast. The difference is simply how many people share it with you.
